The Dinosaur Tree

A bedtime adventure, crafted for mindfulness and creating a soothing bedtime atmosphere. It uses repetitive language that encourages little ones to lie very still and be very quiet at bedtime — “And when you close your eyes, the trees will start to grow…”

    Why It Works at Bedtime

Most bedtime books tell a story. This one is the story — and your kid is in it.

The Dinosaur Tree walks children through lying very still, closing their eyes, and letting their room slowly transform around them. Vines creep up the walls. The bedroom floor becomes the jungle floor. Adventures begin. Sleep follows.

It's the same story I told my own kids for 15 years before it became a book. The repetition is intentional. The pacing is slow on purpose. By the time you hit page ten, half the room is usually asleep.

Ages 3–9. Works best read aloud, lights low.

    Perfect For

    • Children ages 3–9
    • Bedtime routines
    • Dinosaur lovers
    • Gift giving
    • Kids who struggle to settle down
    • Mindfulness without the lecture

This is a darling book with beautiful pictures. It guides the reader through imagery of his bedroom turning into a jungle and going to a beautiful land of dinosaurs. After we read it once, my nephew wanted me to read it to him with his eyes closed as he was falling asleep so he could imagine the journey. Very creative and lovely.

This story is a fun way to encourage children to lay still and go to sleep so that they can experience the dream land of "The Dinosaur tree". This story is written in a soft gentle way that can also be read like a meditation script as the listener closes their eyes. The flow makes the reader naturally relax and imagine what is being described. This story would be best enjoyed by children who love Dinosaurs and long to meet one face to face. It is a relaxing read.

A Calm, Imaginative Bedtime Story — Especially Good for Kids with Busy Minds

Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2026

    Format: Paperback

This book has a very gentle, rhythmic, repetitive style that makes it especially well suited for young children, and I think it would be particularly helpful for neurodivergent kids or for any child who needs help settling their mind before nap time or bedtime. The steady, predictable flow of the language has a calming effect, which makes this a great choice for winding down at the end of the day. As an adult reader, my favorite part of the book is the opening scene. It reminded me of the beginning of Phantastes by George MacDonald, where the main character steps out of his bedroom and finds himself in a forest, entering Fairy Land. There is a similar feeling here of moving from the ordinary world into an imaginative place, and I really enjoyed that sense of transition into a calmer, dreamlike setting. One thing I especially appreciate about this book is the way it encourages children to use their imagination in a positive and soothing way. Instead of overstimulating the mind, the story creates a sense of safety and quiet, which can help children let go of anxious thoughts or the kind of mental restlessness that sometimes makes it hard to fall asleep. It feels very much like a book meant to help the brain slow down and prepare for rest. I can see children enjoying returning to the Dinosaur Tree again and again, and I also like the way the story opens the door for them to imagine other peaceful places of their own as they drift off to sleep. This is a thoughtful bedtime book, and I would happily recommend it to families looking for something calming to read at the end of the day.

    Where Wild Dreams Grow

Reviewed in the United States on March 2, 2026

    Format: Paperback

A clever, dreamy bedtime book that turns falling asleep into an adventure. Children are invited into a prehistoric jungle simply by lying still and closing their eyes — vines creep up the bedposts, ferns unfurl across the floor, and soon a magnificent dinosaur tree rises beside the bed. The story unfolds like a gentle guided meditation, with just enough excitement (a brontosaurus encounter, a lizard friend with a tree-trunk home) to fire the imagination without overstimulating. The pacing is slow and soothing, and the adventures always drift back toward rest. Warm, detailed illustrations beautifully chart the bedroom's transformation into a lush prehistoric world and back again. A magical bedtime read for any dinosaur-loving child.
